Classical Pilates Instructor Certification Program
The classical certification programs at Core Arts Pilates are built on the understanding that learning to teach Pilates well takes time. It takes mentorship, repetition, and deep familiarity with the method across many different bodies. Our programs are structured accordingly.
We are rooted in the classical system as transmitted through Romana Kryzanowska, a direct protégé of Joseph Pilates, and led by studio founder Sharmila Mitra, who apprenticed under Romana in New York in 1999. The instructors who train here carry that lineage into every session they teach.
Training as an Apprentice
The apprenticeship model is how classical Pilates has always been passed down. From Joseph Pilates to Romana. From Romana to the teachers she trained. From those teachers to the next generation.
At Core Arts Pilates, apprenticeship means that candidates learn through sustained, supervised practice — studying the curriculum, observing experienced teachers, working with bodies, being corrected, and working again. Progress is evaluated at multiple points through written and practical examination. Certification comes when the standard has been met, not simply when a set of hours has been logged.
We share this not to be discouraging, but because we want candidates to come in knowing what they are stepping into. The people who flourish in these programs are curious, coachable, and genuinely drawn to the work. They are not looking for the fastest path to a credential. They are looking to become teachers who are worth trusting.
The application process reflects this. A curriculum vitae and two letters of professional recommendation are required for all classical programs. These materials help us understand who you are, how you approach your work, and whether this program is the right fit for where you want to go. We read them carefully.
Three Pathways to Classical Certification
Read through each pathway before reaching out. During our initial conversation, we will discuss which one makes the most sense for your background and goals.
The Bridge Program
For certified instructors bridging from another program or lineage
The Bridge Program is the educational core of our classical system, or the “Classical Framework.” It covers the full Romana lineage curriculum: methodology, pedagogy, sequencing, and apparatus work. This pathway is designed for instructors who already hold a Pilates certification from another program and want to formalize or deepen their classical training through Core Arts.
For bridge candidates, The Bridge Program is a complete, standalone offering. Supervised apprenticeship hours are not included, as these candidates have fulfilled that component through their prior training.
Format: In-studio, cohort-based. A minimum of two participants is required to open a cohort. Tuition is collected once the cohort is confirmed. Candidates who express interest early are placed on a priority list and notified when a cohort is forming.
Recommended throughout: A weekly private or semi-private session at Core Arts Pilates, priced separately from tuition.
Prerequisites
- 20 Pilates sessions completed prior to start, with at least 5 of those as private or apparatus sessions at Core Arts Pilates
- Current curriculum vitae
- Two letters of professional recommendation
- Pre-reading: Anatomy of Movement by Blandine Calais-Germain, with comprehension demonstrated prior to program start
Next cohort: August 2026
Tuition: Contact us for details.
The 600-Hour Program
Full certification for candidates without prior teacher training
The 600-Hour Program is the complete classical certification pathway for candidates beginning their instructor training at Core Arts Pilates. It is a two-stage program. Stage 1 is the Classical Framework (offered in The Bridge Program), which covers the full educational curriculum of the classical system. Stage 2 is the Apprenticeship Hours, a 600-hour supervised teaching experience that completes the certification.
The Apprenticeship Hours begin after the candidate has finished the beginner portion of Classical Framework. Three levels of evaluation, each with a written examination and a practicum, are completed across the full program.
Format: In-studio, cohort-based across both stages. A weekly private or semi-private session at Core Arts Pilates is strongly recommended throughout, priced separately from tuition.
Mat certification credit: Candidates who have completed a Core Arts Pilates mat certification receive a $500 tuition credit at classical enrollment. Mat hours do not count toward prerequisites.
Next cohort: August 2026
Tuition: Contact us for details.
Independent Study Option
All-inclusive, one-on-one training with director
The Independent Study Option is for candidates who are not able to commit to a cohort schedule, or who want the depth and focus of working privately with program director from the first session through certification. It covers everything included in The 600-Hour Program — the full educational curriculum and all 600 Apprenticeship Hours — conducted entirely in private sessions with the director. Candidates who complete this option receive the same certification as 600-Hour Program graduates.
There is no cohort to align with. The program begins when the candidate is ready, and the schedule is built collaboratively with the director.
Candidates in this program are responsible for arranging their own practice bodies throughout training. These are individuals who are not current Core Arts clients and who are available to serve as practice subjects. This is a program requirement.
Three levels of evaluation, each with a written examination and a practicum, are completed across the program.
Format: In-studio, one-on-one with director. Flexible start. A weekly private or semi-private session is strongly recommended throughout, priced separately from tuition.
